3 Tips for Getting Your Kids Comfortable in Front of the Camera
One of the biggest concerns parents have before a family photo session is whether their children will cooperate. As a photographer, I hear it all the time:
"My toddler never sits still."
"My son hates having his picture taken."
"What if my kids don't smile?"
The good news? They don't have to be perfect.
Some of the most beautiful family photos come from genuine moments, playful interactions, and real personalities. If you're preparing for an upcoming session, here are three simple ways to help your children feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.
1. Keep the Pressure Off
The best thing you can do before your session is avoid building it up as a big event that requires perfect behavior.
Instead of saying things like:
"You'd better smile."
"You have to behave."
"Don't embarrass me."
Try telling your kids:
"We're going to have fun together."
"We're going to play some games."
"We're taking pictures because we love spending time together."
Children pick up on stress quickly. When parents are relaxed, kids tend to relax too. My goal during every session is to create a fun environment where children can be themselves rather than feeling like they have to perform.
2. Make Sure They're Rested and Fed
This may sound simple, but it can make a huge difference.
A tired or hungry child is much more likely to become frustrated during a session. If possible, schedule naps beforehand and bring a few easy, non-messy snacks for after photos.
A few great options include:
Goldfish crackers
Fruit snacks
Pretzels
Mini marshmallows
Avoid anything that could stain clothing or leave colorful residue around mouths and hands.
When children feel comfortable physically, they're much more likely to enjoy the experience and engage naturally during photos
3. Let Them Be Themselves
Children aren't meant to sit perfectly still and smile at the camera for an entire session.
Some of the sweetest images happen when kids are:
Running toward mom and dad
Exploring their surroundings
Laughing at silly jokes
Snuggling with their parents
Showing off their unique personalities
Don't worry if your child is shy at first or needs a little time to warm up. That's completely normal. I build plenty of time into sessions to help children feel comfortable and to capture authentic moments as they unfold.
At the end of the day, family photos aren't about perfection—they're about preserving this season of life exactly as it is.
A Final Reminder for Parents
Your kids don't need to be perfectly behaved for beautiful photos to happen.
They just need to be loved.
The laughter, the curiosity, the cuddles, and even the occasional silly faces are all part of your family's story. Years from now, those are the moments you'll cherish most.
So take a deep breath, trust the process, and let your children be themselves. I'll take care of the rest.
