A Sweet First Birthday at Willow Tree Park
Canyon, texas
There’s something so special about photographing a baby’s first birthday. It isn’t just about celebrating one year—it’s about documenting how much has changed in such a short amount of time and creating photographs that become part of a family’s story for years to come.
This first birthday session was especially meaningful because I had the honor of photographing it for a dear friend. We met at Willow Tree Park in Canyon, Texas, on a perfect Saturday evening, and everything about the session felt warm, joyful, and full of love.
A Little Pink, A Lot of Love
From the moment this sweet little girl arrived in her beautiful pink dress and oversized bow, she was ready to steal the show.
Her delicate lace details, sweet expression, and those tiny little hands and feet made every photograph feel like a glimpse into this season of babyhood that passes far too quickly.
And, of course, her family coordinated perfectly around her. Soft pinks, blues, denim, and classic western details created a timeless look that felt completely them.
These are the photographs I love most—the ones that don't just show what everyone looked like, but remind you of who you were together during that season of life.
Golden Light & The Willow Tree
Willow Tree Park was the perfect setting for this session.
The evening sun poured through the willow tree, creating beautiful golden light and a warm, dreamy backdrop. The combination of glowing grass, soft shadows, and those long willow branches gave the entire gallery a cozy, nostalgic feeling.
It was one of those evenings where everything seemed to fall into place—the weather was beautiful, the light was gorgeous, and we had plenty of time to let the family simply enjoy being together.
And that is exactly what I want family sessions to feel like.
Not stiff.
Not overly posed.
Not stressful.
Just your family, exactly as you are.
Capturing More Than a Birthday
A first birthday is a milestone, but these photographs are about so much more than turning one.
They're about documenting Dad holding his baby girl.
They're about the way Mom kisses her little girl's cheek.
They're about a big brother standing beside his baby sister and beginning to build a relationship that will hopefully last a lifetime.
They're about tiny details—the oversized bow, the lace dress, the little shoes, the expressions that will change so quickly.
And they're about creating photographs that your children can look back on someday and see the love that surrounded them from the very beginning.
The Kind of Photos That Become Family Heirlooms
When I think about legacy photography, these are the sessions that come to mind.
Years from now, this little girl won't remember this Saturday evening. She won't remember wearing her pink dress or sitting on a blanket in the grass. She won't remember how the sunlight looked through the willow tree.
But her family will have these photographs.
She'll be able to see how tiny she was.
She'll see the people who loved her.
She'll see her dad holding her, her mom kissing her, and her big brother standing proudly beside her.
And someday, these images may become the photographs displayed in their home, tucked into albums, shared with grandchildren, or passed down through generations.
That's the beauty of photography.
We're not just preserving what someone looked like on a particular day. We're preserving a feeling, a relationship, and a chapter of a family's story.
A First Birthday Worth Remembering
This sweet session at Willow Tree Park was full of everything I love about family photography: warm light, genuine connection, beautiful little details, and a whole lot of love.
I'm so grateful I got to document such an important milestone for my friend and her family. Watching families grow—and getting to preserve those changes through photographs—is one of the greatest parts of what I do.
Because babies don't stay this little.
The dresses get outgrown.
The bows get smaller.
The little hands become bigger.
And childhood moves faster than we ever expect.
But photographs let us hold onto these moments a little longer.
If you're looking for a family or milestone photographer in Amarillo or Canyon, Texas, I'd love to help you preserve your family's story—whether you're celebrating a first birthday, welcoming a new baby, or simply want photographs of your family just as you are right now.
